Type of inspection:
Determining the properties of insulation foam samples for aerospace applications.
Challenge:
Insulation foams in propellant tanks should, on the one hand, provide thermal insulation and, on the other hand, impede the diffusion of small molecules such as hydrogen as much as possible. These properties can be achieved with a foam whose porosity drops radially. Inhomogeneities and imperfections are inadmissible. Production is challenging.
Possible consequences of insufficient foam application:
An insufficient design of the insulation foam on the inside of a fuel tank leads to additional fuel loss by evaporation or diffusion. This impedes the launch process of a rocket.
Advantages of a CT inspection:
- The three-dimensional evaluation by means of CT enables the slightest differences in the internal structure of the heat-treated foam to be revealed as a function of different manufacturing processes.
